Understanding Canine First Aid Is A Lot More Than Only Owning A First Aid Kit
You probably are familiar with the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are every bit as bad since they are incredibly inquisitive and are often in the habit of going places and getting into things that they shouldn't. Even though this doesn't always end badly, they sometimes do end up hurting themselves somehow so it's a wise decision to be familiar with some dog first aid.
Somewhere around the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she found a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and made up her mind to play in them for awhile. When she came back inside the house the burrs had worked their way firmly into places on her face, her ears and her little behind.
It was nighttime so the Vet was already closed and a visit to the animal hospital would have been too expensive. So she had to put up with my tearful yet laughing efforts as I was able to one by one manipulate those burrs out of her hair as she resisted and yelped for at least two hours. They were matted so seriously and right next to the skin that cutting them out was not an option.
A tranquilizer would have been useful but I didn't have anything at all for her. Because there was no blood or major injury, taking a trip to the emergency hospital was not necessary ... that time.
That is a distressing yet amusing story to tell and hopefully an experience she has long forgotten over the years. It was also a little thing although painful and stressful for both of us. But it might have been even worse.
As a conscientious pet owner you need to know at least basic first aid for dogs so that you can be prepared for more critical emergencies. You will often be able to save on Vet charges for minor problems like the one I had. But you may possibly feel the need to help reduce your canine's pain or perform life-saving actions until you can arrive at the Vet.
Having a dog first aid kit is certainly a good thing but you also have to know how to handle things in an actual emergency. Always have phone numbers readily accessible for both your regular Vet as well as the local emergency animal clinic. And learn about basic canine first aid yourself.
I've never been in a position where I needed to provide life-saving medical actions for my four-legged friend and maybe you haven't needed to either. But would you know what on earth to do if faced with a life-threatening situation concerning your four-legged friend?
